Being a middle-aged man, I can say that I can easily recognize the benefits you gain from martial arts and how it contributes towards a healthy lifestyle and to one’s wellness, health, peace of mind and well-being.

You see, being healthy means getting enough sleep, engaging in a healthy and active lifestyle, and maintaining a healthy diet. But, as adults, we know that it is quite difficult to do what is right for our body; as a matter of fact, this could be a struggle to some, due to various reasons and obstacles. Our stressful life, demanding job and fast paced lives contributes greatly why it is hard to unwind and get a good sleep. To boot, we tend to spend more time staring at the computer screen, surfing the net, watch TV, or hang out in a bar drinking. In short, we want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we know what it takes to be healthy, yet we do not rise to the occasion and do what is needed to achieve and maintain good health. But before we jump into the benefits of practicing martial arts, here are some problems that affect people who are in their prime or even those in their late 30’s:

  • Heart Ailments: considered to be one of the most deadly killers today. This problem can, however, be prevented by regular exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. Studies show, that people who exercise regularly tend to live longer after their first heart attack as compared to those who do not exercise.
  • Asthma:  People who are asthmatic usually do not engage in sports or exercise, thinking, it can aggravate their conditions but with regular exercise, the frequency of attacks lowers and eventually improves. Just don’t forget to consult with your physician before engaging in activities that require long periods of exertion.
  • Obesity: No further explanations. People who do not exercise or into physical activities gain weight. They do not burn lots of calories and cannot maintain a healthy weight. Being obese or those living a sedentary lifestyle can lead to further complications.
  • Osteoporosis: Exercise can prevent if not lessen the incidence of osteoporosis. Going into physical activities can strengthen your muscle and your bones, and prevent developing bone density problems.

To allay such maladies, it is advisable to engage in physical activity, just remember to ask your physician what exercise you could go into in order to avoid further complications.

Actually, there are lots of ways to make you healthy or ways to get you in shape. One can hit the gym, run, jog, swim, and bike, and in my case, here are the benefits you gain from martial arts:

  • Martial arts is your total body workout. This fitness program uses every muscle group and is a high-aerobic exercise. Moreover, practicing any form of martial arts increases your stamina, tones the muscle, makes you more flexible and improves one’s balance and strength.
  • In today’s world, we continually face various stressors that could affect our well-being. Our jobs, traffic, financial issues, and even marital spat could stress us, that is why going into martial arts is a great stress reliever. You kick, punch, grapple, jump, shout and even get to hit someone during sparring session which could release tension and melts stress away.
  • As a total body workout, practicing martial arts regularly allows you to achieve and maintain your ideal body weight. Here you burn tons of calories, tone your muscles and your natural eating signals become regulated, reducing food cravings.
  • Unlike lifting weights or swimming, martial arts teaches you to defend yourself by learning life-saving self-defense skills, develop patience and self-control, all of these while you get into shape, and dispelling the myth that martial arts classes are just for kids.
  • Lastly, getting into martial arts makes you confident and you also become more comfortable regardless of the situation you are in. A practitioner of any martial arts discipline discovers that they accomplish anything that they set their mind to. They also become more focused and do things even beyond their comfort zone.

No matter what discipline you decided to go into and train, remember that the benefits you gain from martial arts are still the same. Tae Kwon Do, Arnis, Karate, Jujitsu, aikido, judo and combat karate, these are just some of the many disciplines which you can choose to train. Just remember there is no magic pill in maintaining or in achieving your goal of having a healthy body, it takes a lot of determination, discipline, and the right exercise and martial arts could just be the right fit for you.
